Manila, Philippines – Science of Council of Japan (SCJ) representatives visited the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) last Friday 14 October 2016 at the Paulo Campos Conference Room, NRCP, Taguig City, in preparation for the local hosting of the 17th Conference of the Science Council of Asia (SCA) next year. The SCJ, which functions as secretariat of the Japan-founded SCA established in 2000, was represented by its Director for International Affairs, Kosuke Suzuki, together with two staff, during said meeting with NRCP officials led by President Edgardo D. Gomez.

President Gomez and Director Suzuki tackled requirements and logistical considerations to hold the planned 700-partcipant major conference slated on 14 to 16 June 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City, Metro Manila.

The 17th SCA conference mounts the theme “Science, Technology, and Innovation for Inclusive Development” and will feature plenary and parallel scientific sessions emphasizing six key conference sections, each with own related strands/topics:

  1. Re-engineering Research (in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education) towards Inclusive Growth
  2. Eco-environmental Studies and Ecological Engineering
  3. Human Health and Biotechnology
  4. One Health: Connecting Human, Animal, and Ecosystems Health
  5. Gender Integration and Mainstreaming in S&T Innovations
  6. Disaster Risk Reduction of Natural Disasters caused by Climate Change, Earthquake, and Tsunami

Aside from internationally renowned speakers, the conference will also showcase poster presentations on the various areas of science, technology, research, and innovation. NRCP and SCJ will also jointly hold a meeting of the SCA Board Management Board, composed by scientific leaders from the 19 member countries of the SCA.

In view of the preparations, NRCP will also host a meeting of the SCA Officers on 7 December 2016. The SCA is now headed by Dr. Aminul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences; while NRCP President Gomez serves as SCA vice president.
